Description: The new i~design 3 consortium aims to address population ageing by researching the maintenance of a healthy population that is able and willing to work longer before retirement and can remain independent for as long as possible afterwards along with bringing disabled people into mainstream life and employment.

(1) Understanding the capability demand and resulting exclusion made by a product within its operating environment;
(2) The specification and collection of new inclusive capability data
(3) the redesign of workplaces and jobs to suit the changed profile of the working population.
(4) understanding wellbeing and its relationship to independence;

The proposed research is to develop and disseminate improved inclusive design approaches for new product and service development. This will incorporate improved data for designers that will lead to products and services which enable independence at home, at work, and in other environments and contexts of use; extend working lives and improve access to work for the whole population. In order to calculate realistic levels of product exclusion and difficulty, accurate and up-to-date data on impairment in the population needs to be combined with a robust and complete model of human-product interaction with reference to environmental and social context of use.
